Guide to the Top 40 Accounting Firms

In general, insiders characterize their firms as promoting "respect, integrity and professionalism." Many contacts also say their firms are "teamoriented," and the people are "relatively laid-back and approachable." Even so, employees are "very hardworking," and many firms have a "profit-driven culture." The work is "challenging and rewarding," but you "don't have to work 24 hours a day." An "average day is eight to eight-and-a-half hours," which is "slightly increased" during the three-month busy period (tax season), when employees work "about 60 hours per week." Although jobs at one of the Big Four firms are typically the most coveted, insiders say there are many benefits of working for a middle-market accounting firm. Employees at so-called second-tier firms like having "the size, name and resources" without being treated "like just another number." Some insiders at smaller firms also appreciate the "extremely open and friendly" atmosphere.Typically, firms such as the Big Four and larger mid-tier firms pay a little higher than smaller companies, and today, all accounting salaries are on the rise, as the industry is now considered one of the hot sectors for recent college graduates, and work is overflowing due to Sarbanes Oxley. At nearly all of the top accounting firms, benefits are plentiful and often include profit sharing, a matching 401(k) plan, health and dental insurance, gym memberships, a computer purchase plan, meal allowances, travel and mileage reimbursement, tuition assistance, weekend meals, social events, and memberships and subscriptions.
