The Ultimate Candy Book

If desserts aren't sweet enough or not ready quickly enough, candy provides instant gratification. Bruce Weinstein's The Ultimate Candy Book rushes to the rescue with recipes for all sorts of favorite homemade candies as well as directions for reproducing favorite commercial candies in the home kitchen. Weinstein makes plain the simple method of combining pecans, caramel, and chocolate into homemade turtles. His chocolate matzo makes the deprivations of the Passover season much more bearable. Some unexpected treats appear here, such as coconut snowballs: crisp coconut coating the outside of balls of contrastingly moist, chewy coconut. What's unusual is that they're served straight from the deep freeze.Bruce Weinstein, author of The Ultimate Ice Cream Book, has the answer with this collection of confections. Try his rich chocolate truffles or any one of a dozen variations; sweet, chewy caramel with almonds or coconut; buttery pralines with crunchy pecans; or light-as-air divinity, nougat, and marshmallow.Craft your own candy Christmas ornaments to hang on your tree, pipe chocolate spiderwebs for a scary Halloween touch, or whip up meringue kisses for your honey on Valentine's Day. Bruce even offers step-by-step instructions for creating your own homemade versions of classic favorites like peanut butter cups, gummy bears, and chewing gum.

The South Beach Diet

When Dr. Agatston set out to develop a palatable, safe diet to ensure the long-term health of his chronically overweight heart patients, he also caused an overnight sensation among South Beach's body-conscious beachgoers. Why? With Dr. Agatston's plan, you shed pounds fast-right from the waistline and belly. His scientifically proven program offers immediate results, helping dieters shed 10, 20, 30 pounds while radically changing their blood chemistry, reversing diabetes, and lowering high cholesterol. The diet works in three stages to change your metabolism and then maintain it, with a healthy assortment of meat and fish, cheese, healthy oils and nuts, vegetables, and even small amounts of carbohydrates and sweets. And it does all this without the dangerous long-term effects of the Zone, Atkins, or other severely restrictive diets, which is why The South Beach Diet earned the support of the American Heart Association, which has warned against many other popular diets.

The Oxford Dictionary Of Idioms

The book has a definite British-English and Australian tone. British spelling is used (checque, favours, labour), and many of the idioms are unique to a particular country. Idioms that were not in the first edition or in other idiom dictionaries include hot to trot, New York minute, and wazoo. New illustrative quotations are included from Frank McCourt, the Wall Street Journal, and the Guardian. Surprisingly, 24/7 has not yet found its place in a dictionary of idioms. The Oxford Dictionary of Idioms is current, but the American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms (1997) concentrates on American English. Oxford Reference Online includes the first edition of the Oxford dictionary, and the second will probably appear soon. Libraries that need an up-to-date hardcover source for idioms should consider this new edition

Political Theory and Feminist Social Criticism

Drawing on theoretical insights from Third World women's activism, Political Theory and Feminist Social Criticism develops democratic theory as a critical theory relevant to dealing with real world inequalities. Brooke Ackerly examines the methods by which real world feminist activists have criticized society, and argues that their activities show how feminist theory can move beyond its theoretical impasse toward articulating social criticism with critical teeth. Her book will be of interest to political and social theorists, and to students and scholars of women's studies, feminism, and human rights.

Encyclopedia Of American Political Parties And Elections

Covering all presidential elections through 2004 and newer topics such as Internet voting, this volume contains more than 450 alphabetically arranged entries written by qualified scholars and practitioners on subjects ranging from Absentee voting to the Zapple Doctrine(the FCC policy requiring equal airtime for political candidates). A series of entries examines voter turnout by age, economic status, education, gender, and race, and the analysis of low voter turnout in the U.S. is intriguing. Entries cover terms, not persons, but the index allows the reader to find information on key individuals. Length of entries ranges from around half of a page to four pages.Users are directed to further readings at the end of each article. The extensive bibliography includes scholarly journal articles, such as "Why the Dixiecrats Failed" (1953), Web sites, and numerous monographs spanning many years. The publisher's blurb says the title is for "grades 9 and up," but there is not much to grab a teen's attention or interest. For an older audience, it is filled with useful, thought-provoking information that can help put the American political experience in perspective. Garland's Political Parties & Elections in the United States: An Encyclopedia (1991) and Greenwood's Encyclopedia of American Parties, Campaigns, and Elections (1999) are similar to this new publication, but each of the three has its own slant, and they complement each other rather than competing for space on the reference shelf. Encyclopedia of American Political Parties and Elections is recommended for academic and public libraries. Libraries holding the earlier works mentioned above will want to consider retaining them if space allows, since they do include biographical entries.

Thinking Through Practice

Each of the writers in this contentious and thought-provoking collection is an artist and fine art educator at the School of Art, RMIT University. In the School of Art it is understood that the processes of undertaking the creative project - the experimental works and the testing of ideas right through to the finished artwork - is the research itself. Thinking Through Practice shows what the process of 'thinking' might mean through art and its practices. Each chapter moves us into closer proximity with what it means to think through making and all that is involved in sustained forms of creative practice - questioning, reviewing, reflecting, analysing, performing, speculating, relating, remembering, critiquing, constructing and ultimately further questioning.

Michael Brooks – 13 Things That Don’t Make Sense

Science’s best-kept secret is that there are experimental results and reliable data that the most brilliant scientists can neither explain nor dismiss. In the past, similar “anomalies” have revolutionized our world, as in the 16th century, when a set of celestial anomalies led Copernicus to realize that the Earth revolves around the Sun and not the reverse, and in the 1770s, when two chemists discovered oxygen because of experimental results that defied the theories of the day. If history is any precedent, we should look to today’s inexplicable results to forecast the future of science.

The Ultimate Metabolism Diet:

Atkins, the Zone, the South Beach Diet. Anyone with a serious weight problem has probably tried — and failed — to use one of these diets to lose weight. And it’s not their fault. According to weight loss specialist Dr. Scott Rigden, there is no miracle diet that works for everyone because everyone possesses a unique body type and corresponding metabolism. People can be divided into five different metabolic types that have a corresponding plan of specific dietary and lifestyle habits that make weight loss work. In this book, Rigden helps readers determine their metabolic type and then devotes a chapter to each one with dietary, exercise, supplement, and medicine advice complete with glossaries and case studies. He also includes chapters on emotional eating and how to mentally prepare for weight loss. Readers find out why conventional diets don’t work and, using the guidelines in this book, jump-start their metabolism and experience safe, permanent weight loss.

Nora Roberts Collection

Nora Roberts was born in Silver Spring Maryland, the youngest of five
children. After a school career that included some time in Catholic school
and the disciplines of nuns, she married young and settled in Keedysville,
Maryland. She worked briefly as a legal secretary. "I could type fast but couldn't
spell, I was the worst legal secretary ever," she says now. After her sons
were born she stayed home and tried every craft that came along. A blizzard
in February 1979 forced her hand to try another creative outlet. She was
snowed in with a three and six year old with no kindergarten respite in
sight and a dwindling supply of chocolate Born into a family of readers, Nora had never known a time that she wasn't reading or making up stories. During the now famous blizzard, she pulled out a pencil and notebook and began to write down one of those stories. It was there that a career was born. Several manuscripts and rejections later, her first book, Irish Thoroughbred, was published by Silhouette in 1981.
Nora met her second husband, Bruce Wilder, when she hired him to build
bookshelves. They were married in July 1985. Since that time, they've
expanded their home, traveled the world and opened a bookstore together.
Through the years, Nora has always been surrounded by men. Not only was she
the youngest in her family, but she was also the only girl. She has raised
two sons. Having spent her life surrounded by men has given Ms. Roberts a
fairly good view of the workings of the male mind, which is a constant
delight to her readers. It was, she's been quoted as saying, a choice
between figuring men out or running away screaming.Nora is a member of several writers groups and has won countless awards from her colleagues and the publishing industry.

Race And Time American Women’s Poetics From Antislavery To Racial Modernity

Race and Time urges our attention to women’s poetry in considering the cultural history of race. Building on close readings of well-known and less familiar poets—including Elizabeth Margaret Chandler, Sarah Louisa Forten, Hannah Flagg Gould, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Sarah Piatt, Mary Eliza Tucker Lambert, Sarah Josepha Hale, Eliza Follen, and Mary Mapes Dodge—Janet Gray traces tensions in women’s literary culture from the era of abolitionism to the rise of the Plantation tradition. She devotes a chapter to children’s verse, arguing that racial stereotypes work as "nonsense" that masks conflicts in the construction of white childhood. A compilation of the poems cited, most of which are difficult to find elsewhere, is included as an appendix. Gray clarifies the cultural roles women’s poetry played in the nineteenth-century United States and also reveals that these poems offer a fascinating, dynamic, and diverse field for students of social and cultural history. Gray’s readings provide a rich sense of the contexts in which this poetry is embedded and examine its aesthetic and political vitality in meticulous detail, linking careful explication of the texts with analysis of the history of poetry, canons, literacy, and literary authority. Race and Time distinguishes itself from other critical studies not only through its searching, in-depth readings but also through its sustained attention to less known poets and its departure from a Dickinson-centered model. Most significantly, it offers a focus on race, demonstrating how changes in both the U.S. racial structure and women’s place in public culture set the terms for change in how women poets envisioned the relationship between poetry and social power. Gray’s work makes contributions to several fields of study: poetry, U.S. literary history and American studies, women’s studies, African American studies and whiteness studies, children’s literature, and cultural studies. While placing the works of figures who have been treated elsewhere (e.g., Dickinson and Harper) into revealing new relationships, Race and Time does much to open interdisciplinary discussion of unfamiliar works.
